Continuing on with our month of Diabetes awareness, I wanted to add some more details about Diabetes and our Eyes.
Last time I talked about Diabetic Retinopathy, or what happens to the blood vessels in the retina with diabetes. But did you know that Diabetes also increases our risk of Cataracts at an earlier age? Diabetes also increases our risk of developing Glaucoma by 2x. Your eyes might also have a dramatic change in vision. They might become more nearsighted or more farsighted, and you might even develop double vision.
There are many risk factors for developing diabetes. These include smoking, Hypertension, drinking alcohol, family history of diabetes and pregnancy.
If you are diagnosed with diabetes, be sure to see your optometrist for a thorough eye examination, and at least once a year after that.
